Yahoo Aviate
2013 - 2018, 5 years old
An Android launcher that rearranged your home screen by time of day, location, and what you were doing.
Aviate was built by ThumbsUp Labs and launched as an invite-only Android launcher in 2013, promising a home screen that learned your routine and surfaced the right apps at the right moment. Yahoo acquired ThumbsUp in January 2014 in a deal valued around $80 million, opened the launcher to all users, and bolted on a Smart Stream of contextual cards. Updates slowed after Verizon bought Yahoo's operating business. The last release went out in May 2017, and on March 8, 2018, Yahoo killed the app entirely, telling users it would stop functioning. The contextual-launcher idea was later absorbed into Google's own Now and Assistant work.
