Google Doppl
2025 - 2026, 1 year old
An experimental Google Labs app that tried clothes on an AI avatar built from a single full-body photo.
Google Labs released Doppl in the United States in June 2025 as an experiment in virtual try-on: upload one full-body photo, point the app at any outfit you found on the web, and watch an AI-rendered version of yourself wear it. The experiment worked, which at Google Labs is its own kind of death sentence. Within a year the try-on technology had been promoted into product listings and image results across Google Search and Shopping, and the standalone app was surplus to requirements. Doppl shut down on April 30, 2026, pulled from both app stores, with any looks users had not downloaded made inaccessible after the deadline. The technology was a success; the app was the packaging it shipped in.
