Google Whisk
2024 - 2026, 1 year old
A playful Google Labs image generator that remixed a subject, a scene, and a style instead of asking for a text prompt.
Whisk came out of Google Labs in December 2024 with a premise closer to a toy than a tool: drop in an image for the subject, one for the scene, and one for the style, and it remixed them into something new, no prompt required. It found an audience among people for whom writing prompts was the least creative part of image generation. It was also an experiment inside a company that was busy consolidating its experiments. In March 2026 Google announced that Whisk was moving into Flow, the AI filmmaking platform built around its Veo video model, and on April 30, 2026 the standalone product shut down, its best features absorbed, its unmigrated libraries permanently deleted. Sixteen months from launch to consolidation is not a failure by the standards of Google Labs; it is the life cycle.
