Google Pixel Studio

2024 - 2026, 2 years old

A Pixel-exclusive AI image generator that shipped as a reason to buy the phone and was switched off from inside its own app update.

Pixel Studio arrived in August 2024 as a reason to buy a Pixel 9: type a prompt, get an image, keep a library of what you had made, and later add stickers, image-to-image editing, and the ability to put people in the frame. It was a capable app carrying one structural problem, which is that Google was building the same capability into Gemini at the same time, where it would reach every phone instead of one line of them. Google confirmed the ending to 9to5Google in February 2026 and carried it out on June 5 through the app's own version 2.3 update, which is a candid way to go: the last thing Pixel Studio did was install the notice saying it was finished. What remains is a button pointing users toward Nano Banana in the Gemini app. Existing creations stayed where they were and the Pixel features that called Pixel Studio kept working, so what actually died was the icon, the library, and the premise that image generation was a reason to choose a phone.
