A self-driving car startup spun out of Stanford's AI Lab, known for retrofitted vans running geofenced shuttle pilots in Texas.
Drive.ai was on the brink of closure and had filed plans to lay off about ninety staff when Apple stepped in days before shutdown for an acqui-hire focused on engineers and assets for Project Titan. The startup had been squeezed by bigger AV competitors and could not raise on its $200M peak valuation. Apple kept the talent and hardware; the Drive.ai product and brand were retired.
