Bench
2012 - 2024, 13 years old
An online bookkeeping service that pitched itself as AI-augmented bookkeeping for small businesses.
Bench shut its doors with no warning on December 27, 2024, locking thirty-five thousand small business customers out of their books between Christmas and New Year. TechCrunch reporting and a later Canadian bankruptcy filing revealed more than $65M in debt, a failed late-stage funding push, and operational strain from trying to automate bookkeeping without enough human review to catch systematic errors. Employer.com bought the IP and customer data days later and offered transitions, but the original Bench product was gone.
